Subject: Producer Change of Address On-line - Continuing Education Compliance

The purpose of this memorandum is to remind all licensed producers and licensed insurers of South Carolina's insurance law regarding the requirements for change of address notification and the effect on Continuing Education compliance.
It has come to the Department's attention that some licensed insurance producers are not reporting address changes to the Department within the thirty-day time period as required by South Carolina Code Ann. §38-43-107. That Section reads as follows:
(A) When an individual applies for an insurance producer's license he shall supply the department his business mailing and residence street address. The producer shall notify the department within thirty days of any change in legal name or in these addresses.
(B) Failure to inform the insurance director or his designee of a change in legal name or address within this period shall result in a penalty pursuant to Section 38 2 10. Individuals violating this law could be subject to administrative penalties up to $2500.
To help producers meet this legal requirement, producers can now go on-line and make changes to their address by using the Department's website: http://www.doi.sc.gov/. The following steps will help ensure a successful change of address:
On the left side of the website, click: SCDOI Connect – Login/Logout to advance the screen.
When the screen changes, look to the top-right side of the page across from the User Id and Password boxes and you will be asked to CREATE AN ACCOUNT. Click on this highlighted area. It does not cost anything to create an account. Creating an account merely involves typing in your social security number, date of birth and answering several questions that only the producer will know the answer. This information is required to CREATE AN ACCOUNT.
Once all questions have been answered, click NEXT, and the screen will advance for the producer to select a password and user id number known only to the producer. Once this information is entered and saved, the respective producer's licensing and address information will be displayed on the screen. Changes can then be made. Please protect your user Id and password information.
Attention to these details will help ensure insurance producers receive timely notification and meet South Carolina's continuing education compliance deadline of May 1, 2004, and avoid the risk of having their licenses canceled.
